Čiovo Island: A Peaceful Croatian Break

Why do we keep going back to Croatia you may ask?

Well, for starters it’s beautiful and we always find somewhere new to explore. Secondly, it’s familiar and for our first solo yacht charter, we decided ‘better the devil you know’

Our flight from Toulouse was with Volotea as usual, and for a change we weren’t departing at 06h00. After an easy drive early morning to Blagnac, we parked the car in P5 and waited for the shuttle. Before we knew it, we had arrived at the airport, gone through security and were boarding the 09.40 to Split.

After another great flight, we picked up the car from Enterprise and headed to Lidl in Split….it was Sunday and supermarkets in Croatia are only able to open so many Sundays a year. Seems they take it in turns within their chain so if you need shopping on a Sunday, check what’s open!

Eventually we made it to our apartment for 6 nights on Čiovo Island. It’s no longer an island. A couple of bridges attach it to the mainland at Trogir but it still feels like an island!

We had booked Ocrux apartments for their location, 50m from the sea, and not much further to a bar on the beach that we knew would be open that we had discovered on our last trip.

The whole block is new and very modern. There are a few steps to the entrance and we didn’t see a lift to higher floors but our studio was on the ground floor. There are various apartments available and we would definitely stay there again. Our studio was compact but very adequate for 6 nights. We had a washing machine and iron so Alison was happy!

After unpacking our 10kg hand luggage, we headed to ‘our’ bar, Bok,  for a drink and to watch the sunset.

The next few days seemed to fly by. Lazy mornings, a trip to Split to look at a boat for sale (we didn’t buy it) a lovely wander around Split and more evenings spent in Bok watching the amazing sunsets.

We drove around the island finding beautiful coves, isolated beaches and little bars. A few had already closed by mid October but there were enough open for us to enjoy. We had a nice wander around the marina in the hope of spotting our home for the next week but she hadn’t got back in yet. We’d look forward to Saturday afternoon.

We mainly ate in, using the facilities in our little studio. It was lacking an oven so by the end of the week, we were feeling the pasta overload.

We did eat at Bok one night, just junk food but it was tasty (as it always is).

We also ate at a great restaurant a short walk from our studio, Konoba Mirkec. Alison had a pizza for a change and Janine tried the Sea Bass.

All too soon we were packing up and heading to ACI Marina Trogir

We’d had a lovely relaxing few days. The weather had been variable but mainly clear skies and warm.

Happy lasses!
Farewell until next time…

We thoroughly recommend Croatia in October. The crowds have gone, the sea is still warm enough to swim and most bars and restaurants are welcoming due to the lack of trade!

If you haven’t been to Croatia, get it booked!
